Hospitality

Turks are very hospitable people, they are not the richest people, in fact some of them are downright poor. Yesterday we went to visit a friend of MHTTB, he was at his girlfriends house. She didn't know us at all, but the hospitality was immediate, she invited us to join her for a barbeque. The food was simple fresh chicken and fish with salad. I used to hate people turning up unexpectedly at mealtimes, but she just took it all in her stride, most Turkish people do. They seem to be able to rustle up a delicious meal from nothing at the drop of a hat. She had a small, clean lovely house in the middle of nowhere at a place called Yaniklar. It is a village about a 15 minute drive away. My Turkish is very poor, but with the help of Google translate we managed to have a good chat and a laugh.

Today a man came to quote for putting a chimney up for the wood burner, including the materials I am looking at a cost of 700tl, which is about £140 quid at todays rate. Considering I am on the first floor and he is going to have to put it up about 6 metres, it was a lot cheaper than I thought it would be, he's noticed some damaged tiles on the roof and has recommended that I look at replacing it in the summer, I'm sure I will be pleasantly surprised on the price again. It's not worth doing at the moment, the colder weather is coming in and while the roof doesn't leak I can live with it.

Anyway, the sun doesn't always shine in Turkey. Last night and all day today it has been raining torrentially, with thunderstorms. Usually at this time of year, the pool has been emptied, but another resident had renters in and asked the maintenance guy to keep it filled, it is almost at the point of overflowing now, it has been raining that much. Still there hasn't been any rain for 8 months and it is needed, and what do I care? I am tucked up indoors with the heating on so it can rain all it likes.

Oh and I had a call from the transporters, my furniture has cleared customs, and it should be with me either late tomorrow or early on Wednesday. Finally I can get all my clothes off the floor!!

And finally look at these cuties. They are about 5 months old, they need protecting from the rain so what can I do? I'm just a sucker for cats

  3. Once a cat lover, always a cat lover!

Really enjoying your blog, tripped over it whilst looking for something else :)

I'm planning for the expat life to, in Uganda. Boyfriend is Ugandan and I just love the life there. Seems very similar in that they are not rich people but would give you their last crumb.

    1. Hi Snowy owl.
Thanks for the encouragement. Now to reciprocate. Go for it! If you try and don't like it then at least you have tried. I honestly didn't think I would be doing this so soon, but I am and so far, so good. I don't know much about Uganda but I'm sure that if they'd give you their last crumb then it can't be bad! Good luck
